Sanctuary of space and time
Recently I started lighting candles in the bathroom and my bedroom. It started off as a feeble attempt at making the evenings more relaxing for my husband. The candle-lighting did not last very long. Firstly. we could do it only after the children are in bed by which time we just want to SLEEP! Secondly, for a single-income household, it was rather stressful seeing money (literally!) melting away, which defeats the whole purpose of lighting it in the first place. However, just at about the same time, I realised that my husband would bring his Ipod into the bathroom and listen to music as he showered.
One day, I decided that I would light a candle, and have the music playing while I showered. I listen to Piano Chill, lovely instrumental music by Whole World music.
I loved it.
So now, for fifteen minutes in the evening, I have my little sanctuary of space and time. I lose track of time in the warm flickering candlelight, listening to the music. I usually take less than fifteen minutes, but it feels as if I have been away for ages, as I step back into the din, the bright lights, and the never-ending pool of responsibilities. It is surreal, and it makes me happy.
As a result, my husband now has more relaxing evenings. 😉
