School of Modern Levites
Elkan and Elias attended the School of Modern Levites (SML) Children Music Camp on 6 – 8 Dec 2011. The SML is part of a ministry in my church, FCBC, which helps develop musicians to serve in the worship team. This means that they will lead a group of people in singing songs of praise to God.
There were four tracks – the keyboard, the guitar, the drums and the vocals. Elkan and Elias did the guitar track.
The camp was lovely for the following reasons:-
1) The materials SML prepared were excellent. This is what Elkan and Elias learned in the guitar track:-
a) Types of guitar, Parts of Guitar, Tuning the Guitar
b) Strumming Patterns
c) Chords
2) They learn how to work as a team. As this is a music band training, the children also learn about band dynamics, and they had the opportunity to play together as a band.
3) The camp was mainly led by young people in their teens and early twenties, whom the children called ‘Gor Gor’ and ‘Jie Jie’ and many of them were previously trained by the SML. The young people can really relate to the children. It is clear that the young people teaching had a real passion for what they do and care for the children.
4) The finale was a time of appreciating the track and group leaders, and also a time when the parent and children pray and bless each other. My three boys (although Samuel (5) did not participate in the camp, he went to watch his brothers) hugged me and I felt so loved.
5) Elias performed on stage during the finale! I was so proud of him. Unfortunately, I was late for the performance, and Elkan, without prompting from me, recorded his performance for me! It was a pleasant surprise. He said he recorded it for me since I was not able to be there (oh how sweet….).
It takes a village to raise a child. Thank you, SML for raising my children.
