Remember why you got married
This is a forum letter (ST 11 Mar 2012) by Peter Stephens which touched my heart. Here is an excerpt:-
“My wife has stood by me through everything, from the days I struggled to put food on the table although I was working two or three jobs, through the raising of four children (We now have two lovely grandchildren), and the moves from Australia to the United States, to Singapore and back to the US.
I have fallen short many times and made mistakes. I have made my wife cry and we have argued. There have also been nights when I could not sleep because I was so worried about money matters.
But my wife has believed in me and backed me when she had every reason not to. Never once did she make me feel inadequate. There were times when we had cereal for dinner as I didn’t earn enough, and my wife would still set the table as if we were having a banquet.
Too often, married couples would focus on their jobs, house, children, cars and everything else, and wonder why their marriages wither.
Remember why you got married, and live up to those vows every day. Jobs come and go, houses have a price, and cars break down. But I can truly say that after 33 years of marriage, there is nothing in the world more precious than being in love with your best friend.”
